HUM Privacy

HUM — Voice to MIDI turns a hummed melody, a bass line or a beatboxed beat into MIDI notes on your iPhone or iPad. It is built so that your voice stays on your device.

The microphone

HUM uses the microphone only while you are recording a take or a layer, or playing in LIVE mode, where your voice plays an instrument in real time. iOS asks for your permission before HUM can use the microphone, and you can withdraw that access at any time in Settings ▸ Privacy & Security ▸ Microphone.

What HUM does with your voice

All of the analysis happens on your device: finding the notes, the drum hits, the tempo and the key, and suggesting chords. Your voice is never sent to us, and it leaves your device only if you choose to send it, as described below.

Your recordings and takes

HUM keeps your recordings, and the takes it makes from them, in the app's own storage on your device. That is why REANALYSE can read your original voice again later. They are not uploaded anywhere.

When something leaves your device

Only when you choose to send it. Share MIDI and Share take open the iOS share sheet, so you can send a file with AirDrop, save it to Files or pass it to another app.

If you turn on iCloud Drive in HUM, HUM saves to your own iCloud Drive. It does not use iCloud unless you turn it on.

Send to HUM sends a take over your local network to your own computer running the HUM desktop plugin. HUM finds that computer with Bonjour, Apple's local-network discovery, so iOS asks your permission before HUM can look for devices on your local network.

In LIVE mode, HUM can send MIDI over Wi-Fi, through Apple's network MIDI session, or over Bluetooth MIDI, to the devices you connect. HUM asks for Bluetooth permission only for Bluetooth MIDI.

None of these routes sends anything to Echelon Audio.

Siri and Shortcuts

The Hum an Idea shortcut opens HUM and starts recording. That is all it does.

What HUM stores on your device

Your recordings and takes, as described above, and your settings, which are kept in the app's settings storage on your device. None of it is sent to us or shared with anyone. Deleting the app deletes it.

Purchases

HUM Pro is sold through the App Store, and Apple processes the payment. HUM only learns from the App Store whether HUM Pro is active; it never sees your payment details. How HUM Pro is sold and renewed is set out in the HUM terms.

Network

HUM has no account and no sign-in, and it sends nothing to Echelon Audio servers. It contains no advertising, analytics or tracking, and no third-party SDKs. Its only connections are the ones you start, listed above, and Apple's App Store for HUM Pro.

Data we collect

None, in the app. HUM does not collect personal data, usage data, identifiers, location, contacts or anything else. This website is separate: echelon.audio measures its own pages with a first-party beacon and the Meta Pixel, as our site privacy notice explains. The one thing we do receive is what you choose to send us: if you email support, we hold that message and whatever you put in it for as long as it is useful to resolve the case, and we delete it on request.

Keeping and deleting your data

Everything HUM keeps lives on your device, so you decide how long it is kept. Deleting the app deletes its data: your recordings, your takes and your settings. Files you have already shared, saved to Files or sent to your iCloud Drive or your computer stay where you put them. You can withdraw microphone and Bluetooth access at any time in Settings ▸ Privacy & Security. Your HUM Pro purchase is held by Apple against your Apple ID, not by us, and Restore brings it back on your devices signed in with the same Apple ID.

Children

HUM is not directed at children under 13. It collects no personal data from anyone, including children.

Changes and contact

HUM is published by Echelon Labs LLC, the company behind Echelon Audio. If HUM ever changes how it handles data, this page will be updated and the app's version notes will say so.
