HUM for iPhone and iPad

HUM Support

Hum a melody or a bass line, or beatbox a beat, and HUM turns it into MIDI on your phone. Below are answers to common questions. If yours is not here, email us and a person will answer.

What does HUM do?

Hum a melody or a bass line, or beatbox drums (kick, snare and hi-hat), and HUM turns it into MIDI notes on your phone. It finds the tempo and key by itself, so you can just hum. It suggests chords, lets you stack parts in layers and plays them back with built-in instruments, and it exports Standard MIDI files or a session .zip. LIVE mode turns your voice into a real-time MIDI instrument. HUM is a companion to the HUM desktop plugin, but it works on its own.

What is free, and what does HUM Pro add?

Free, you can work on one project at a time, with two parts playing at once, and there is no export. HUM Pro adds unlimited projects and parts, MIDI and session export, Share, AirDrop, Send to HUM and iCloud, fixing notes by hand, and LIVE MIDI out over Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. It comes as a monthly or yearly subscription or a one-time Lifetime purchase, and the price of each is shown in the app before you buy. The details are in the HUM terms.

I bought HUM Pro on another device

In HUM, go to Settings ▸ HUM Pro and tap Restore. Make sure you are signed in with the same Apple ID you used to buy it.

How do I cancel my subscription?

In iOS, open Settings ▸ [your name] ▸ Subscriptions and cancel HUM Pro there. To stop the next renewal, cancel at least 24 hours before the end of the current period. Lifetime is a one-time purchase and never renews. Refunds are handled by Apple at reportaproblem.apple.com.

HUM hears the wrong notes

Sing or hum clearly, and wear headphones when you record a layer, so the microphone hears your voice and not the parts already playing. If HUM still picks up too much or too little, adjust the sensitivity. REANALYSE reads your original voice again, so you can try a different setting without singing it again. With HUM Pro you can also fix notes by hand.

How do I get the MIDI into my DAW?

Tap Share MIDI and send the file with AirDrop or save it to Files. GarageBand, Logic, Ableton Live and FL Studio all open .mid files. If you use the HUM desktop plugin, Send to HUM delivers the take to it over your local network. Exporting is part of HUM Pro.

How do I play LIVE MIDI into my Mac?

With the Mac and the iPhone on the same Wi-Fi network, open Audio MIDI Setup on the Mac, go to MIDI Studio and open Network, then connect to your iPhone. What you sing in LIVE mode then arrives on the Mac as MIDI. LIVE can also send over Bluetooth MIDI. LIVE MIDI out is part of HUM Pro.

Can I beatbox one drum at a time?

Yes. Open the take and go to TAKE ▸ ADD A LAYER, then choose Beatbox the kicks, Beatbox the snares or Beatbox the hi-hats. Each pass records one drum, and the layers stack up into the beat.

Where are my takes stored?

In HUM's own storage on your iPhone or iPad. They are not uploaded anywhere. A take leaves your device only when you share it, send it to HUM on your computer, or save it to your iCloud Drive with iCloud turned on in HUM. Deleting the app deletes your takes, so share or export anything you want to keep first.
